November 2008 Archives

I am stumbled this evening upon a blog entry from Prof. Dr. Andrea Back in her blog BackonTheFuture. I stick on this topic for quite a time now, since a good friend of mine has begun to write his master thesis about prediction markets.

But recently the topic became more relevant, since it has been discussed in the light of the american presidential elections and the forecasts. This has been an interesting topic not only because of the accuracy of prediction markets, but also since the two most known candidates have used the web completely different. You will find a few more posts about this special aspect of prediction markets or collective intelligence in the blog mentioned above.

What fascinated me today was the fact, that there are several tools out there in the web now, which we can use as private users and benefit from the huge pool of knowledge in the internet. So this is one of the more fascinating aspects of the so called "Web 2.0".

Recently I decided to set up my new homepage with the Zend Framework, since it is one of the more mature frameworks and they have a consistent development of the framework, this means no bigger changes in coding style since version 1.2 or so. Other frameworks may be good as well and have maybe even more sophisticated methods for a rapid application development (RAD), but this is not to discuss here.

I started two weeks ago, mainly on the weekends to work on the tutorial from Pádraic Brady which he published on his blog "Maugrim The Reaper's Blog". The tutorial, which as announced will be revisited, can be found here.

After working through this tutorial you will be able to work on your own with the framework pretty well. One of the first problems I encountered was, that I had to use Selects in the forms to link with other components of my application respectively set a foreign key into the MySQL-Table.

The almighty Google

The Swiss consumer broadcast "Kassensturz", showed in their last episode (11.11.2008) a report about google and data privacy.
Additionally to the report, the expert for information law, Prof. Dr. Urs Gasser from the University Of St. Gallen has been invited for an interview.

Have a look at the video (in German and Swiss Native German):

After using long time version 7.03 of the Lotus Notes Client for OS X, I have now switched in a first try to the 8.5 Public Beta 2 version, hoping that Notes would have improved.

LN_85Beta_Loading.pngI was positively surprised at the first glance. The application became quicker than the old one. Although after a few starts, I had to realise, that the most caching and loading is now done at startup. You see a nice screen at the startup, which tells you now, that Notes is doing something and not freezing. But compared with other programs, which use a lot of memory (such as Adobe Photoshop), the startup process is within the limits.

The really big brochure in the free newspaper "Cash Daily" from the 4th November 2008 remembered me on some articles just a week ago, published by the other free newspaper in Switzerland "20 Minuten". Somehow this seems as big image campaign for saving its face in front of business customers.
