The answer:
The browser or internet browser is a piece of software you have/need on your computer to surf (i.e. retrieve from and send information to) the internet. See the wikipedia article here
The most asked people did not know the difference between a browser and a search engine. So a browser is Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer (to name just a few) and a search engine is an application from/on the internet such as Google, Bing or WolframAlpha (and there are many more).
The clue is, that the most search engines are nowadays integrated into the little field on the upper right in your browser. So you can just type into your web browser and do not have to go to the site of the search engine itself. But this is just a tool or a way of integration. The two things (browser and search engine) remain different "programs".
